Oconee National Forest - Scull Shoals

places where you won't be able to wipe the wag off your dog's tail - Greensboro GA

This land was settled by veterans of the Revolutionary War with land grants for their service and was the site of Fort Clark, a wooden blockhouse with stockade, in 1793 during the Oconee Indian War with the Creek Indians. Zachariah Sims and Thomas Ligon built mills on the Oconee River around 1800 and in 1810 operated the first paper mill in Georgia here. Scull Shoals developed into a prosperous agri-industrial community until a disastrous flood triggered by massive soil erosion from surrounding cotton farms inundated the community in 1887. In 1897 the mills were sold and the town abandoned and by 1935 when the federal government bought the land Scull Shoals was a ghost town. The Boarding House Trail that explores the remains of Scull Shoals can seem as forgotten as the town itself as it visits the manager’s house, the old power plant and the warehouse-store. Other nearby trails include the one-mile Scull Shoals Trail along the river and the Indian Mounds Trail at the end of Forest Service Road 1231A (passed on your left on the way in). Or you can take off with your dog for a hike down one of the lightly traveled forest roads.

Directions - From I-20, take Exit 130 north on Route 44 into Greensboro; turn left on Route 15 and go north 12 miles to Macedonia Road on the right; turn and go two miles to Forest Road 1234 (gravel) on the left and follow two miles to Forest Road 1231 on the left. Turn and continue one mile to the parking area.
