Russell Cave National Monument

places where you won't be able to wipe the wag off your dog's tail - Bridgeport AL

While other cave destinations in this section are notable for wondrous geology, Russell Cave is significant for its long and complete archeological record of human habitation. Scientists have carbon-14 dated bone tools, jewelry and pottery fragments unearthed in this limestone rock shelter back 9,000 years.

Like their canine ancestors, dogs are allowed to join their human companions in Russell Cave. A half-mile boardwalk pathway leads to the floor of the upper entrance to the cave. Nearby a short walking trail describes area plants used by the cave dwellers and a 1.2-mile hiking trail - coated in macadam the entire way - snakes up the side of the mountain above the cave. It is a challenge for even the most athletic of dogs.
